Initiated by the Diocese of Magdeburg
Under the patronage of the president of the State Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt, Mister Steinecke
In 2007 we celebrated the 800th birth anniversary of the great medieval mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg. One brave woman who lent wings to German language through her poetic metaphors. A mature woman and a Beguine who plays a remarkable role in the history of Magdeburg. She is the only internationally-known woman whose name is directly related to capital of Saxony-Anhalt, and yet has disappeared out of the public's awareness in this region.
For this reason the Diocese of Magdeburg fulfilled the idea of celebrating Mechthild's 800th anniversary with a special year. A year that is dedicated to Mechthild of Magdeburg in order to rediscover everything about her, and especially to take her way of perceiving things, her courage for alternative manners of living and her social commitment as an example.
Between September 2007 and September 2008, many different events take place within the diocese in order to remember this woman and her work, and to give strength and courage for the future.
We would like to invite you to go with us on this journey of discovery.
The grand opening event of the anniversary year took place from the 7th to the 9th of September of 2007. Visitors enjoyed the extra-long medieval market, thematic short programs on 4 stages and the highlight, “The Elbe River in a Flowing Light”, a unique light and sound performance.
